Learn More About Eyelid Malposition

Eyelid malposition is an umbrella term for the different types of eye conditions that affect the normal position of eyelids. The different forms of eyelid malposition include ectropion, entropion, eyelid retraction, and floppy eyelid syndrome (FES). The position of eyelids is essential for protection, moisture retention, tear production, drainage, and normal function or blinking.

If you’re experiencing sagging eyelids or have noticed your lids have turned inward or outward, then call Myint Oculo Facial Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, NV, today. We’d be happy to set up a consultation with seasoned ophthalmic plastic surgeon Dr. Shoib Myint so you can learn about all of your treatment options.

Eyelid malposition surgery in Las Vegas, NV, at Myint Oculo Facial Plastic Surgery, offers effective functional and aesthetic benefits, including:

  • Enhances vision by expanding line of sight
  • Reduces eye discomfort
  • Creates a more youthful appearance
  • Improves tear production, drainage, and moisture retention
  • Provides almost immediate improvements in comfort, function, and appearance

There are a wide number of eyelid malpositions we could identify during your appointment. These could include congenital ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid), blepharophimosis syndrome, epicanthal fold, euryblepharon, epiblepharon, entropion (when the eyelid curves inward toward the eye), and ectropion (when the eyelid curves outward). The treatment we recommend will depend on which type of eyelid malposition you have.

The exact cause of eyelid malposition can vary between patients. Still, typically, it’s caused by tissue laxity that comes with advanced age, paralysis of the facial nerve (due to Bell’s palsy, stroke, or other neurologic condition), trauma, scarring, or surgery.

The most common symptoms associated with eyelid malposition include obvious changes in the position of the eyelids, dryness, redness, chronic irritation, excessive tearing, mucous discharge, impaired vision, and infection.

Eyelid malposition can pose several risks and complications. One primary concern is the potential impact on vision, as malpositioned eyelids may obstruct the visual field or lead to excessive tearing. Additionally, eyelid malposition can cause discomfort, irritation, and dryness of the eyes. In severe cases, the misalignment may contribute to corneal exposure and increase the risk of corneal abrasions or infections.

It is essential for individuals experiencing symptoms of eyelid malposition to consult with a member of our team at Myint Oculo Facial Plastic Surgery for a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management.

Eyelid malposition can typically be diagnosed by Dr. Myint during a one-on-one consultation at his office. During your appointment, Dr. Myint will review your medical history, examine you, and listen to your symptoms and concerns.

Typical tests include asking you to blink or close and open your eyes forcefully, gently pulling your eyelids to test skin laxity, and generally examining the condition of your eyelids. He will then be able to determine if the issues you are experiencing are, in fact, eyelid malposition or another problem that can be treated.

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid folds inward, usually occurring in the lower eyelid. This causes the eyelashes and skin to brush and rub against the eye, causing discomfort, pain, and irritation. While rare in children and young adults, as many as 2.1% of adults over 60 are affected by entropion.

If entropion is left untreated, it can lead to cornea damage, eye infections, and in some cases, vision loss. In the worst cases, the damage done to your eye may be irreversible. If you are having vision issues due to entropion, it’s crucial to seek professional assistance as soon as possible to safeguard your vision.

Eyelid malposition is generally treated with surgery. Dr. Myint’s goal is to reposition or reconstruct the eyelid(s) to achieve a more symmetrical and natural appearance. The procedure is usually performed with local anesthesia on-site at our  facility in Las Vegas.

Dr. Myint will excise excess skin (if that’s a concern) and use various tightening techniques to reposition the lid(s) while restoring function to the underlying muscles and tendons. Surgery typically takes about 1 – 2 hours to complete.

The most effective surgery to repair drooping eyelids is blepharoplasty. Also known as an eyelid lift, this procedure involves removing excess skin, fat, and muscle to tighten the eyelids. Even if your vision and eye health are not affected, you might seek blepharoplasty for cosmetic reasons to create a more “awake” appearance.

Many patients have visited Dr. Myint in Las Vegas, NV, for eyelid surgery to help restore the natural shape and function of their eyelids. Most patients experience immediate improvement following surgery for eyelid malposition and enjoy their results for many years. Since this procedure is often considered medically necessary, partial coverage is typically offered by most major insurance providers.

Candidates for eyelid malposition treatment include individuals experiencing functional or aesthetic concerns due to the abnormal positioning of their eyelids, such as ectropion (outward turning) or entropion (inward turning). This condition can result from aging, trauma, previous surgeries, or congenital issues and often leads to symptoms like irritation, redness, excessive tearing, or difficulty closing the eyes.

Treatment is suitable for those in good health, with realistic expectations, who may seek to improve eyelid function or appearance. A consultation with a qualified surgeon is essential to determine the best treatment approach.

Eyelid malposition surgery can last up to two hours, considering whether one or both eyes are treated. After this outpatient surgery, you should plan about a week to rest. A cold compress can help reduce discomfort, swelling, and bruising. The results from eyelid malposition surgery may last a decade or longer, but even though they are lasting, the aging process does not stop.
