The eyelids affect our facial appearance more than we realize, complementing the eyes and adding unique characteristics. Unfortunately, when your eyelids droop or sag, it can create undesirable asymmetrical changes in facial features. This can diminish your youthful appearance and dull your self-confidence. The good news is there is something you can do about it with help from Dr. Shoib Myint.

Dr. Myint is a board-certified and fellowship-trained Oculo Facial Plastic and reconstructive surgeon whose expertise can help you regain a refreshed appearance with blepharoplasty or an eyelid lift. What does an eyelid lift entail?

Blepharoplasty, or an eyelid lift, is an outpatient surgical procedure that can be performed safely by Dr. Myint in Beverly Hills, CA or Las Vegas, NV. Two main areas contribute to the eyes' tired appearance: the upper eyelids and the lower eyelids. As we age, the skin and tissue around the muscle that holds up the eyelids stretch and weaken, resulting in a saggy, droopy, and puffy appearance that brings out an overall tired look. Not only can it add years to our physical appearances, but for some, it can also affect the outer fields of vision.

An eyelid lift can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids, depending on facial characteristics and areas of concern. Upper blepharoplasty takes care of excess baggy skin in the upper eyelids. Lower blepharoplasty addresses puffiness under the eyes by removing extra, unwanted fat. Both an upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed at the same time if it is appropriate for your situation.

Sedative medication is usually given through intravenous (IV) access to keep you calm and relaxed during the procedure. Local anesthesia is also injected just under the skin to numb the areas where the surgeon plans to make the incision. Stitches are used to close the incision, and no scarring should develop. On average, the procedure takes 1 – 2 hours. There will be a short recovery period in the clinic almost immediately after surgery to ensure you receive proper post-op instructions before going home to avoid complications and promote quick healing.

When can I exercise after an eyelid lift?

Our eyes and the areas around them consist of many blood vessels. Any strain after surgery puts pressure on these blood vessels and can cause bleeding and, more seriously, hemorrhage. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid strenuous activity for at least the first seven days after surgery. Straining can occur from bending over, squatting, lifting more than ten pounds, pushing, or pulling, so avoid these motions.

Generally, you must avoid vigorous exercises for 3 – 4 weeks. Sometimes, short walks are not allowed until after 3 – 4 days. Physical activity restrictions are necessary after blepharoplasty. During your eyelid lift consultation with Dr. Myint, he will discuss any activity restrictions after an eyelid lift and when you can incorporate exercise into your plan for recovery. Nothing is more important than protecting yourself from complications after surgery.
