When you make the decision to undergo a cosmetic procedure on something as visible as your face, it is only natural to wonder when you’ll start to look and feel “normal” and be able to return to work and other activities. For patients undergoing eyelid lift surgery specifically, recovery is actually fairly quick compared to other procedures. Use the helpful information from board-certified and fellowship-trained Oculo Facial Plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Shoib Myint and the knowledgeable Las Vegas and Beverly Hills teams at Myint Oculo Facial Plastic Surgery to better understand what to expect during recovery after an eyelid lift.

What is blepharoplasty surgery?

More commonly known as an eyelid lift or eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty is a popular cosmetic procedure that aims to reverse signs of aging around the eyes and/or correct natural concerns regarding the eyelids. Blepharoplasty surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both and is typically performed on both eyes in order to create the best possible symmetry and most natural-looking result.

What does an eyelid lift do?

Some of the most common concerns that lead people to pursue blepharoplasty surgery include:

  • Excess skin on the upper eyelids
  • Heavy upper eyelids
  • Wrinkled eyelids
  • Hooded eyes
  • No eyelid crease
  • Saggy eyelids
  • Bulging fat under the eyes
  • Wrinkles under the eyes
  • Puffy lower eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Downturned eyes
  • Tired-looking eyes

How is eyelid lift surgery performed?

In most cases, blepharoplasty can be performed using local anesthesia only and typically takes about 1 – 2 hours to complete. For upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Myint will create an incision within the upper eyelid crease to remove excess skin and lift the eyelids. In a lower eyelid lift, an incision is made along the lower lash line. Tiny sutures are used to close the incisions at the conclusion of the case.

What to expect after an eyelid lift

After eyelid lift surgery, patients can expect bruising, swelling, and tenderness around the eyes. Some patients also report a feeling of tightness following surgery. These symptoms are typically mild and subside within about 1 – 2 weeks, with most patients able to return to work within about ten days – and often much sooner.

How long does blepharoplasty swelling last?

Swelling is one of the most common side effects of eyelid lift surgery. After about 24 – 48 hours, patients will begin to notice visible swelling that becomes most apparent around days 3 – 5, after which time it should quickly subside. The majority of patients feel comfortable returning to work and other activities within about 10 –14 days, by which time visible eyelid lift swelling should have resolved.

What’s the right age for an eyelid lift?

Eyelid lift surgery can be performed at almost any age, but most patients typically begin to notice sagging eyelids or bags under the eyes around their mid to late 30s. Whether you are just starting to become self-conscious about your wrinkled eyelids or have been thinking about eye rejuvenation surgery for decades, we can help.
